Top of Your
Class Boys Volleyball Camp
July 14-17,
2008
The camp is
limited to 120 players and is specified to the player’s
position of Outside Hitter (left and right), Middle Blocker,
or Setter. Ideally there would be 40 in each position but it
is difficult to predict. Certain positions will close (i.e.
outside hitters) before others if there is an overabundance of
applicants.
The coaching
staff is chosen with collegiate coaching experience as the
number one priority. The best college coaches who are
available are hired. Current athletes from the UCSB program
will help on the court but the head coaches are collegiate
coaches. A practice plan is designed by Coach Preston and
the court coaches implement it but with their own style. The
majority of drills are designed as game type (pass, set, hit)
drills with maximum contacts.
Players will
be separated into groups based on their ability and by
position. On a normal day, players will train with their
position coach in the morning. During this session,
fundamental movement patterns and skills unique to that
position will be taught. In the afternoon, positions will
join together and practice tactics with another head coach.
In the evening, the camp will scrimmage, again with another
head coach on the court. By the end of camp, each player will
have been exposed to each coach’s style and personality.
In addition
to the skill sessions, each morning will begin with a
lecture. The content of these lectures ranges from advanced
tactics, to academic requirements for the collegiate student
athlete along with recruiting policies, to a presentation of
the schools represented by the coaches. This camp is a great
way to find out about college volleyball programs and be in
the gym with representatives of those programs.
All sessions
are in the beautiful Campus Events Center where there are
seven courts and possibly Robertson Gymnasium where there are
three courts. All practice sessions are held on indoor
courts. Santa Barbara is located 100 miles north of Los
Angeles between a 3,000 ft mountain range and the Pacific
Ocean. The University itself is on the bluffs of the Pacific
Ocean, and has beautiful views of the mountains and the
Channel Islands off the coast. |
